Bicycle Therapeutics (NASDAQ: BCYC) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company developing a novel class of medicines. The pipeline includes Bicycle Toxin Conjugates® as well as Bicycle tumour-targeted immune cell agonists (Bicycle TICAs) and Bicycle® systemic immune cell agonists. The company’s initial internal programs are focused on oncology indications with high unmet medical need. Bicycle is headquartered in Cambridge, UK, and their US operations run out of Lexington, MA.


The development and protection of a commercially orientated patent portfolio is critical to Bicycle’s continued success. Given the strength of its early innovations, fundraising successes and cross-healthcare partnerships, Bicycle already enjoys a highly active and engaged IP culture and is now seeking to appoint a dedicated senior patent specialist to become their new Head of Intellectual Property.

Reporting into the General Counsel, the successful appointee will have the autonomy to develop the IP function and therefore this position requires an exceptional IP leader with a pragmatic and hands-on approach. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Oversee, review, and implement global, regional, and local patent strategies.
  • Draft and prosecute patent applications in all areas for the business.
  • Manage maintenance of Bicycle’s patent portfolio.
  • Supervise outside counsel engaged in drafting and prosecuting patent applications and in post-grant challenges.
  • Acquire detailed understanding of the technologies, products, and R&D activities of the business.
  • Counsel key technical and business personnel, including the board of directors, on intellectual property portfolio development and strategies, adversarial proceedings, competitive IP and commercial activities, and licensing opportunities.
  • Interact with colleagues in the US and UK daily to provide IP advice.


The successful candidate is likely to fulfil the following criteria:

  • Registered patent attorney, with significant life sciences experience.
  • A combination of in-house and private practice experience preferred.
  • PhD / Post doc ideally with an organic chemistry focus.
  • Comfortable having regular interactions with the bench scientists.
  • Thorough understanding of, and very comfortable with peptide/chemistry.
  • Uses latest technology for patent prosecution and docketing.
  • Comfortable overseeing, reviewing, and implementing a global patent strategy.
  • Highly collaborative, strong relationship building skills with a high level of integrity.
  • First class communication and influencing skills with the ability to manage multipipe stakeholders.
  • Resilient and able to work effectively in a demanding and fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to occasionally travel internationally.
  • Track record of providing commercially focused advice to senior management and boards.
