THE OPPORTUNITY

Volvo Cars, Global IP team in Gothenburg is looking for a new team member who is an experienced IP Lawyer to provide specialist intellectual property law advice and be a business partner to the organization for IP matters to be based at headquarters in Gothenburg, Sweden. The successful candidate will be joining a high-performing team who focuses on supporting the company’s ambition to lead the global automotive industry in safety technology, electrification, and autonomous driving.

As part of the Global IP team at one of the most respected and recognizable car brands in the world, the candidate will be at the centre of the IP arrangements for new technologies which are key to the business partners and will have the opportunity to drive change, work with continuous improvement and take on all types of challenges in a truly dynamic environment.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Legal support for all kinds of IP matters,
  • Drafting, reviewing, and negotiating agreements with high complexity and related to advanced technology,
  • Proper use of Open Source Software to manage associated risks,
  • Negotiation and drafting of software agreements, IP licenses, research agreements and joint development agreements,
  • IP due diligence for M&A activities,
  • Support for IP aspects of procurement agreements
  • Close collaboration with legal, patent, brand and compliance colleagues,
  • Supporting and coaching of team members,
  • Managing outside counsel in IP matters,
  • Support increasing IP awareness and driving the strategic IP agenda.

THE CANDIDATE

The successful candidate will ideally possess the following qualifications, experience, and attributes:

  • Master of Law degree or similar, qualified to practice law in at least one relevant jurisdiction.
  • Possess at least five years’ of relevant post-qualification experience as a lawyer in practicing IP law at a law firm and in-house.
  • Highly experienced and knowledgeable in all IP legal areas required to fulfil the key responsibilities.
  • Understanding of and a proven interest in high-tech, including software and data licensing.
  • Significant exposure to legal aspects of open-source software and collaborations.
  • Exposure to licensing relating to technical standards will be considered a merit.
  • Excellent Drafting skills.
  • Proven analytical skills and experience in making decisions, negotiating, and developing solutions or judgments within relevant IP areas.
  • Ability to identify improvement areas and embracing change.
  • A business- and service-minded, structured, and detail-oriented person.
  • A team player with excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Fluency in English, with knowledge of Swedish (drafting and negotiating agreements) preferred.
