Smart Vehicle Architecture™
“With all the talk about automated driving and advanced safety systems, infotainment systems and in-car WiFi, people don’t think about what it takes to make all of that happen. It’s the car’s nervous system.”
Glen De Vos, SVP, CTO and President, Mobility & Services Group
By 2020, vehicles will exchange 100,000 pieces of data in a literal blink of an eye. How will they handle all this data and power distribution? By being built on a radically optimized architecture. Enter Aptiv.
Updating a car‘s wiring is a lot like performing neural surgery. Every wire is part of an intricate and increasingly complicated network. How intricate? Today’s premium cars have 2.5 miles of wiring and more than 100 ECUs. And both those numbers are growing larger and more complex every day.
As new vehicles become smarter and advanced driver assist systems (ADAS) evolve from semi-autonomous to fully autonomous, cars will become rolling supercomputers. Aptiv is building the architecture that allows these data-devouring computers, transceivers, and sensor technologies to send, receive, and process billions of bits of data in order to see and make decisions to move vehicles and their human passengers safely and reliably, all without a human driver.
Aptiv is supported by a lean and agile global IP team that fosters and captures the company’s innovation, aligns their patent strategy with the company’s commercial aims, designs solutions for avoiding infringement risks, supports on due diligence for transactions in an increasingly acquisitive automotive market and much, much more. Aptiv are now seeking a new patent counsel to join the company in Dublin, Ireland.
The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for supporting research and development in Europe for the company’s Signal & Power Solutions business. But there are no firm lines and division of duties. Exposure to Aptiv’s Advanced Safety and User Experience business is also on offer. The precise contours of the opportunity can be shaped to a significant degree by your own strengths and interests.
We want to hear from European and US-qualified patent attorneys with a background in electrical or mechanical engineering. Prior in-house experience is preferred but not necessary: if you have the aptitude and desire to adapt to in-house life after several years in a law firm, the department is open to supporting you in making that career transition.
Given future trends in the automotive industry, attorneys with practical experience of the semiconductor or telecommunications industries could be of particular interest. Most crucial, though, is a demonstrable passion for the ongoing innovation in the automotive sector. Join Aptiv to help transform the future of mobility.
