The Opportunity

The firm is now looking for a highly accomplished IP executive with exceptional qualities and deep expertise in the Biotech sector to join as the Principal / Senior Associate for the Life Science & Biotechnology Practice in Australia, ideally based in Brisbane, Sydney, or Melbourne.

The successful candidate will be responsible for drafting and prosecuting patent applications, advising clients in relation to patent portfolio management, infringement, and patentability issues, as well as assisting in patent oppositions and/or patent litigation. Moreover, the ideal candidate will collaborate and participate in strategic planning initiatives to drive the company forward and contributing to the achievement of the Firm’s broader strategic objectives.

Working closely with the Life Sciences team, the Senior Biotech Patent Attorney will develop and implement plans that will drive brand awareness, new client in-take and client experience as well as work with start-up companies and academic clients and develop tailored IP strategies that allow them to maximise their commercial potential.

The position offers scope for significant autonomy, continuing professional development, and the opportunity to work with highly experienced practitioners across various disciplines servicing the firm’s substantial local and overseas client base.

 

The Candidate

This position requires a commercially-minded Senior Patent Attorney with a pragmatic, business-oriented and hands-on approach, as well as:

  • Postgraduate qualification in Biotechnology;
  • Highly effective communication skills (verbal and written);
  • Drive and enthusiasm;
  • A demonstrated commitment to delivering exceptional service levels to clients and quality outcomes for both our clients and the Firm;
  • High level of attention to detail and accuracy;
  • Analytical skills for review of process and structure;
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills;
  • Aptitude for business development.

The successful candidate will have the following expertise:

  • A minimum of five years post qualified experience as a Biotech Patent Attorney;
  • Experience in a broad range of patent attorney work including drafting of patent specifications, local and foreign patent prosecution, opposition work, and providing infringement and validity opinions;
  • The ability when necessary to pivot from thinking strategically to acting operationally;
  • An exceptional communicator with the ability to build and maintain effective relationships;
  • Excellent working knowledge of current trends and initiative
