The Opportunity

The fact that people are now living longer presents the pharma and biotech industries with many challenges, ranging from the urgent need to develop new active substances to the provision of customised individualised therapy. Maiwald support their clients along the entire length of the supply chain ranging from research into new small molecules, biomolecules and new vaccines to stem cell therapy, innovative concepts in the area of drug delivery and new therapeutic approaches, all the way up to personalised medicine and diagnostics.

As Maiwald continues to see growth in demand for its IP services across a variety of its existing and new clients in the pharmaceutical and biotech sectors, an opportunity has arisen for a (senior) associate to join the firm’s esteemed practice. Working alongside a key partner in the practice, you will be able to build experience spanning the entire patent life-cycle and covering a wide range of scientific fields.

Key responsibilities and services offered to clients will therefore include:

• Providing crucial freedom-to-operate opinions.
• Drafting, filing and prosecuting patents before the European Patent Office.
• Coordinating with partner outside counsels in further jurisdictions.
• Supporting on opposition and appeal proceedings.
• Providing further support on patent litigation cases in conjunction with the legal team.

The Candidate

The successful candidate will possess:

• Qualification as a European Patent Attorney, and ideally as a German Patent Attorney.
• A strong academic background in biology, biochemistry or a related discipline.
• Up to five years of post-qualification experience.
• Prior experience managing IP for multinational pharmaceutical and biotech companies.
• Fluency in English, and ideally German.
