The Opportunity

  • Actively driving the IP strategy;
  • Supporting and advising the R&D teams in the preparation of invention disclosures;
  • Patent support for development projects including FTO analyses and patentability;
  • Preparation and filing of domestic and international patent applications as well as supervision of the examination procedures;
  • Carrying out patent research as well as initiating, supporting and evaluating external service providers;
  • Supervision of the inventor remuneration process; dealing with matters relating to employee inventions, in particular calculation of remuneration;
  • Monitoring the patent protection of competitors and prosecuting patent infringements; analysis of the intellectual property situation and trends in the technology environment;
  • Preparation and support of opposition/nullity proceedings and license negotiations.

The Candidate

ABB has a collaborative culture and is looking for a commercially minded patent attorney with the ambition to continue to build on this strong foundation. The successful candidate is likely to fulfil the following criteria:

  • Background in electronic engineering, physics or similar;
  • Minimum seven years’ relevant experience gained from a reputable IP Law firm and / or in-house.
  • Dually qualified as a European and German Patent Attorney;
  • Fluent in English and German. French is also desirable.
  • Excellent linguistic and presentation skills to be able to illustrate complex technical and legal issues;
  • Open minded and with excellent interpersonal and communication skills;
  • Flexible to work with interdisciplinary teams and with a creative mindset;
  • Proactive nature, comfortable working independently with strong consulting skills and the ability to influence and gain commitment.
