To meet the increasing volume and complexity of research and business activities within Tropic’s technology development teams, Tropic Biosciences is looking to appoint an experienced (Senior) Patent Counsel.

The Patent Counsel will enjoy a high level of autonomy and diversity in dealing with a broad range of patent and business matters with responsibilities including, but not limited to:

  • Having a detailed understanding of the scientific developments within the TechDev teams and becoming the contact person for all IP matters relating to those teams;
  • Being responsible for identifying and proactively actioning all IP matters within the Technology Development teams, including invention mining, identifying requirements for FTO analyses, supporting commercial agreements relating to innovations developed within the Technology Development teams etc.;
  • Liaising directly with R&D teams, project managers and external collaborators to identify inventions and determine how best to protect them;
  • Supporting drafting and filing of patent applications, including instructing the R&D teams on experimental work required to support filing and working closely with outside counsel to coordinate drafting and filing strategy;
  • Managing global prosecution of the TechDev patent portfolio and coordinating prosecution strategy with external counsels;
  • Providing strategic and commercial advice to the senior leadership team based on IP analysis, on an ad-hoc basis as well as within regular IP steering committee meetings.


Tropic Biosciences has a collaborative, diverse and proactive culture and is looking for a commercially minded Patent Attorney with the ambition to continue to build on this strong foundation and with the following criteria:

  • A PhD in biology, specialising in Genetics / Molecular Biology / RNA biology / Gene Editing / Gene Silencing / Plant Biology / Bioinformatics or adjacent fields;
  • A proactive self-starter with an ability to independently initiate projects and take ownership of them;
  • Agile and enjoys a fast-paced, fast-changing environment;
  • A strong communicator, able to clearly and succinctly relay complex information to colleagues across a breadth of backgrounds and functions within the company;
  • Qualified Patent Attorney (European/UK/US, candidates qualified in other jurisdictions may be considered);
  • Experience in coordinating international patent prosecution across multiple jurisdictions;
  • Experience in patent drafting;
  • Prior in-house experience (ideally in a Life Science/Biotechnology company) would be a plus;
  • Experience in supporting contentious matters (opposition, litigation etc.) would be beneficial.
