Client: A Law Firm in Canada

The Company

We are proud to be partnering with a leading business law firm in Canada in its search for a US Patent Attorney to join the firm’s Intellectual Property group and play a central role in its continued strategic growth. Headquartered in Montréal and established for over 30 years, the firm is widely recognised for uniting legal excellence with commercial insight, delivering integrated, business-driven solutions to innovative clients across North America and Europe.

The Opportunity

This role invites a seasoned, experienced U.S. Patent Attorney to join our client as part of a strategic expansion. In this position, the successful candidate will work directly with founders, CTOs, and investors from both sides of the Atlantic – advising not only on patent protection, but on how IP can become a true strategic and financial asset. These exceptional clients include AI and quantum pioneers, deep-tech startups, and leading venture capital investors – companies and funds that are actively shaping tomorrow’s technologies. Based in the client’s headquarters in Montréal, Canada, or working from a remote location in the United States, the appointed person will be responsible for:

  • The drafting, filing, and prosecution of high-value U.S. patent applications in computer science, AI, and advanced computing
  • Assisting with opinion work, transactional and litigation support
  • Working in direct coordination with the firm’s European and Montréal teams, including European Patent Attorneys and technical specialists at the forefront of deep-tech
  • Provision of strategic, business-driven IP advice to venture-backed startups, scale-ups, and investment funds – helping them secure, leverage, and monetize their innovation
  • Participation in portfolio-level IP strategy, due-diligence reviews, and freedom-to-operate analyses supporting financings, acquisitions, and international expansion.
  • Engaging in client development and thought leadership within the AI and quantum ecosystems in North America and Europe.

The Candidate

Beyond technical excellence, this role is designed for a strategic advisor who thrives in a forward-thinking, entrepreneurial environment that values autonomy, diversity, flat hierarchies and merit-based progression. It offers the chance to influence international IP strategy, contribute to thought leadership in the AI and quantum ecosystems, and build long-term client relationships within one of Canada’s most respected full-service firms. The ideal, successful candidate should possess:

  • A full qualification as a U.S. Patent Attorney, with an AI, Software Engineering or Advanced Computing degree from a reputable university;
  • A U.S. law degree from a reputable university;
  • At least 5 years of experience in drafting and prosecuting patents in the software, AI or advanced computing space;
  • Excellent communication skills coupled with good interpersonal skills, to interface effectively with colleagues and clients both verbally and inwriting;
  • A team player mindset and the motivation, drive and determination to assist in the development of the practice and the firm as a whole;
  • A proactive, solution-oriented and independent working style with excellent analytical skills;

Candidates should also demonstrate an interest in and desire to pursue their career in a dynamic, forward-thinking culture and firm, which promotes attorneys to progress their responsibilities and career purely on their abilities and track record, without traditional reference to seniority and ‘time served.’
