Background

Mathys & Squire, a leading European IP firm, came to Adamsons in light of both growth strategy and Brexit legislative uncertainty surrounding the IP sector. With this in mind, the firm’s goal was to build a further office within Europe. Following discussions with Adamsons, it was established that Munich – the IP capital of Europe – would be the ideal location to grow the business, whilst simultaneously offsetting any concerns surrounding Brexit.

Criteria

Key to this project was to hire critical and qualitative mass from the outset, rather than pursuing a ‘postbox address’ hire. In keeping with its growth strategy, Mathys & Squire saw this as an excellent opportunity to hire recognised and established Partners within the Munich market, with their own respective teams and established client bases, who could thereafter build out additional headcount sensibly and strategically.

Challenges

Whilst there are over 2,000 European Patent Attorneys within the Munich region, finding recognised and established Partners within top tier IP firms, who are able to bring with them both talent and established client bases, naturally narrows the search parameters. Moreover, it was critical to find individuals that fit culturally and professionally with Mathys & Squire, given the desire to form a cohesive and long-term European unit.

Outcome

Over the past three years, lateral team searches have become the specialisation of Julian Adamson, Managing Partner of our Munich office. Consequently, Adamsons was able to quickly identify specific individuals and teams that would match the demanding requirements of Mathys & Squire. To that end, following meetings with a variety of options, Mathys & Squire was able to successfully on board two highly experienced teams in 2019, with a view to a further team in 2020.
